Killdeer

A Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) near one of our ponds. Although technically a shorebird, Killdeer are often found in open fields, far from water. They have a huge range, covering all of the U.S., well into Canada and are even found in South America. They are well known for pullling ‘the broken wing’ routine to lure predators away from their nest and chicks. They build no nest, just lay their eggs in a depression on the ground. The chicks closely resemble the adults and can run in a matter of hours after hatching.
